SKATE SHARPENING

SKATE SHARPENING

Consistency is the key to good skate sharpening. Skate blades which have been neglected or poorly maintained are harder to sharpen and don't perform well on the ice. Clean strong edges improve control and a skaters confidence in the blades. If the blades are of poor quality steel or have been overheated by bad sharpening, the blade edges are considered to be weak. Weak edges are more prone to roll or snap off because they are brittle. Some sharpeners try to compensate this problem by sharpening with a deeper hollow, but this only compounds the problem. The deeper hollow gives the skater an edge, but the skate controls the skater and we all know the skater should be in control of their skates.

INTRODUCTION TO THE MAXIMUM EDGE PROCESS

Herm's Sport Exchange is an Authorized Dealer of the Maximum Edge skate sharpening process. This process is used by numerous N.H.L. teams and over 120 other pro organizations. We offer a superior standard in skate blade maintenance. The sharpening system incorporates our own patented finish process and profiling. This process enhances the number one factor in skating - skater control.

The system provides an improved center of gravity, resulting in greater maneuverability and increased speed. Blade profile and a square radius should compliment the skaters ability instead of creating body compensations and physical stress. Skating styles, height, weight, and players position are major factors, but the more accurate the skaters center of gravity, the greater the results in personal performance.

PROFILING

Profiling is the matching of the skate blades to each other and to the skater. Herm's recommends that all hockey skates should be profiled once a year and profile maintenance done after ten to twelve skate sharpenings.

Profile maintenance consists of checking the blades for consistency and correcting differences. A skate sharpener who uses constant blade pressure and speed may slightly alter the blades after ten sharpening, but poor sharpening will immediately change the profile.

It is important to understand that the skaters blade profile determines the center of gravity, ultimately affecting skating style, speed, stops, starts, stick handling and shot control and performance.

What our customers are saying:

The best skate sharpening I have ever had. The balance was great. Sharp enough to give me bite to challenge, but smooth enough to move laterally. No break in period either. I recommend the process to all my goaltenders.

As a professional skating instructor I know that properly profiled and sharpened skates are a must to achieve proper skating technique and balance. I fully endorse the Maximum Edge skate sharpening system.

Carole Robinson, President
Powerstride Hockey Techniques

I noticed a big difference the first time I had my skates sharpened by Herm's. I felt I had more control of my skates. My stops were smooth and my turns were tight. I feel I have more agility while skating due to the reliable edges. The consistency of square edges and a smooth finish every time I get my skates sharpened is why I won't go anywhere else.
